Our History

Initially founded by Dean Sophie Roland of the Don Wright Faculty of Music, COAA operated through Western University for a decade of successful programming. Alumni of the program would go on to work as répétiteurs in top opera houses, music directors on Broadway, and performers in major opera companies worldwide. The hiatus of 2020 is over, and COAA is finally back! Beginning in May 2027 we are offering a new 13-day intensive program designed to hone your skills, develop your career, and create with the colleagues and mentors that make our opera community so extraordinary!
In 2026, baritone, voice teacher, opera director and arts administrator, Dr. Anthony Rodrigues took over the artistic direction of COAA independently to answer the call for emerging artists looking to bridge the gap to the professional world, strengthen their skills and training while seeking networking and performance opportunities. Anthony is joined by soprano, voice teacher, interdisciplinary researcher, and arts administrator, Dr. Hannah Pinhorn as program manager. Further, COAA boasts a renowned faculty of Canadian opera professionals and educators, with affiliations to Western University, University of Toronto, Glenn Gould School, Opera 5, Canadian Opera Company, and more.
